θα ακολουθεί μπαρ στην Πλατεία Μερκούρη, στις 16:00, για την οικονομική υποστήριξη των φυλακισμένων

Καλούμε σε αυτή την πορεία για να συνδέσουμε τους συχνούς ρατσιστικούς ελέγχους ταυτοτήτων στις πλατείες στο κέντρο της Αθήνας και στα μέσα μαζικής μεταφοράς, με τις μαζικές φυλακίσεις σε κέντρα κράτησης, που βρίσκονται σε απομονωμένες περιοχές σε όλη την Ελλάδα, μακριά από τις πόλεις. Όταν άτομα συλλαμβάνονται- ενώ ταξιδεύουν, βγαίνουν από σταθμούς του μετρό, επιστρέφουν από την εργασία τους και χαλαρώνουν σε δημόσιους χώρους- μεταφέρονται σε αστυνομικά τμήματα και συχνά κρατούνται σε κελιά κράτησης για μέρες, βδομάδες ή μήνες, πριν μεταφερθούν στην Αμυγδαλέζα, όπου οι συνθήκες έχουν σχεδιαστεί για να επιδεινώνουν τα βασανιστήρια.

Γνωρίζουμε ότι μέσα στην Αμυγδαλέζα υπάρχει μαζικός υπερπληθυσμός, χαλασμένα συστήματα ύδρευσης, επιθέσεις από κοριούς, ελάχιστη πρόσβαση σε ιατρική και νομική υποστήριξη και μη βρώσιμα τρόφιμα. Ο νέος αντι-μεταναστευτικός νόμος έχει ως στόχο να θέσει υπο κράτηση όλα όσα δεν έχουν χαρτιά, επεκτείνοντας το πιθανό όριο κράτησης από 18 σε 24 μήνες, δίνοντας στα μεταναστά την επιλογή μεταξύ απέλασης ή φυλάκισης.

Οι κατώτερες των προδιαγραφών,αποθαρρυντικές συνθήκες μέσα στα κέντρα κράτησης ωθούν τα κρατούμενα σκόπιμα στα όρια τους, σωματικά, ψυχολογικά και νομικά. Τον τελευταίο χρόνο, τουλάχιστον 2 άτομα αυτοκτόνησαν μέσα στα κέντρα κράτησης, τουλάχιστον 5 άτομα μέσα σε αστυνομικά τμήματα και γνωρίζουμε ότι υπάρχουν συχνά απόπειρες αυτοκτονίας και περιστατικά αυτοτραυματισμού μέσα στα κέντρα κράτησης, λόγω των συνθηκών και της μη ενημέρωσης σχετικά με το πότε θα αφεθούν ελεύθερα. Πρόκειται για μια σαφή μέθοδο βασανιστηρίων που εφαρμόζεται μέσω του δομικού ρατσισμού, σε μια προσπάθεια να αναγκαστούν όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερα μη Ευρωπαία να εγκαταλείψουν την Ελλάδα και να ενσταλάξουν φόβο σε όσα μένουν. Αυτός ο φόβος εφαρμόζεται καθημερινά στους δρόμους και στα μέσα μαζικής μεταφοράς, μέσω ελέγχων ταυτοτήτων και της νέας αστυνομίας μεταφορών, καθιστώντας τη ζωή για τους έγχρωμους ανθρώπους με ή χωρίς χαρτιά μια συνεχή πίεση.

Η χρήση της αστυνομίας και των φυλακών ενισχύει την πολιτική αφήγηση που συνδυάζει τη μετανάστευση με την εγκληματικότητα, στην οποία τα ρατσιστικά στερεότυπα ενθαρρύνουν τη διαίρεση στις γειτονιές μας, αυξάνουν την εκμετάλλευση στην εργασία, ενθαρρύνουν την ακροδεξιά και εντείνουν τον κοινωνικό διαχωρισμό στη στέγαση, την εκπαίδευση και την υγεία.

Bicycle/moto demonstration against detention centres

This will be followed by a bar in Plateia Merkouri, 16:00, to raise funds for prisoners

We are calling this demonstration to connect the frequent racist ID checks in plateias in the centre of Athens and on public transport to the mass incarceration in detention centres which are located all around Greece in isolated areas far from the cities. When people are detained while travelling, exiting metro stations, returning from work and relaxing in public spaces, they are taken to police stations and often kept in holding cells for days, weeks or months before being transferred to Amygdaleza, where conditions are intended to increase suffering. We know that inside Amygdaleza there is mass overcrowding, broken water systems, bed bug infestations, minimal access to medical and legal support and inedible food. The new anti-migration law aims to increase the state's powers of incarceration: through imprisoning people who enter without documents, extending the time limit of detention from 18 months to 24 months, and forcing people to choose between deportation or prison. Through the new law we are likely to see not only a further escalation in the criminalisation of migrantised/racialised people, but also an expansion of prison infrastructure and populations, given the already dire overcrowding in both criminal prisons and detention centres.

The substandard, demoralising conditions inside detention centres deliberately push people to their limits physically, psychologically and legally. In the last year at least 2 people inside detention and at least 5 people inside police stations took their own lives, and we know that there are regular suicidal attempts and incidents of self harm inside detention centres due to conditions and having no information on when they will be released. This is a clear method of torture implemented through structural racism in an attempt to force as many non-Europeans to leave Greece and instil fear into those that stay. This fear is implemented daily on the streets and on public transport through ID checks and the new transport police, making life for people of colour with or without papers a constant stress. The use of police and prisons reinforces the political narrative that combines migration with criminality, in which racist stereotypes foster division in our neighbourhoods, increases exploitation at work, emboldens the far-right and deepens the segregation in housing, education and health. We see the struggle against detention centres not as an isolated issue, but part of the wider struggle against militarisation, the new penal code and the continued rise of authoritarianism and fascism in society.
